Ministry of Supply Car Service cap badge, WWII plastic, King's crown

Price: 15 - 25 $

In January1939 set up an organisation called the Mechanised Transport Training Corps with the intention of retaining a role for volunteer women drivers outside the ATS. It was to be a uniformed civilian service, uniforms (and in some cases the vehicles) to be supplied at members' own expense. Following service with the BEF in 1940 the organization dropped the word "Training" and became the Mechanised Transport Corps (MTC). There were various official attempts to de-uniform the MTC but the Corps were eventually supplying essential services to many government departments. One of the largest users was the Ministry of Supply and in March 1943 that Ministry declared its intention to regularise the employment of the MTC by establishing a uniformed MoS MTC Car Service. This was to have a distinctive uniform and badges. The service continued into the post-war years and through various changes it remained in existence in the form of the (non-uniformed) Government Car and Despatch Agency until at least 2008.
