At the first days of IDF was customary to wear caps and hats similar to today's officers. There are various aiguillettes in various colors and combinations and each represents a different course or profession. בראשית דרכו של צבא ההגנה לישראל היה נהוג לחבוש כובעים הדומים לכובעי הקצינים של היום. על גבי הכובעים היו מספר מצומצם של סמלי כובע כגון סמל צה״ל עם רקע אדום לחילות השדה, סמל צה״ל עם רקע כחול לחיל הציוד וההספקה- החיל שממנו התפתח חיל הלוגיסטיקה. בנוסף היו סמלי כובע שונים כגון סמל חיל התותחנים הראשון, סמל פורום מטכ״ל ( החל משנות ה- 50 ) וסמל הג״א ( החל משנות ה- 50 ). את הכובעים השונים החליפו הכומתות השונות המוכרות לנו היום ונענדות על ידי כוחות הביטחון השונים. כל חיל או חטיבה אימצו לעצמם צבע שונה כדי לייחד את החיל כמו אפור לחיל האוויר, כחול כהה לחיל הים, אדום לצנחנים וסגול לגבעתי. היוצאים מן הכלל אלו חיל התקשוב וקורסים שונים או חילות שונים שאין להם כומתה משלהם והם עונדים כומתה בצבע זית. הכומתה השחורה מייצגת את חיל השריון שעבורם הכומתה השחורה היא הכומתה הרשמית בנוסף לסמל הכובע של חיל השריון.

סמלי הלוגו השונים רבים ומגוונים וקיימים סמלי לוגו שלא בהכרח יצאו כסיכה או פאץ׳ רשמיים אלה כרעיון לסמל או כגאוות יחידה.

דגלים ודגלונים בכוחות הביטחון משמשים לכמה צרכים: דגלים רשמיים של היחידות השונות משמשים לטקסים רשמיים והחלפת פיקוד ביחידות השונות. בנוסף קיימים גם דגלים רשמיים של מדינת ישראל, צה״ל, משטרת ישראל, משמר הכנסת וגופי הביטחון ומוסדות הממשלה השונים. בכל משרד ממשלתי או בית משפט חובה לתלות דגל ישראל והכרזת העצמאות כהכרזת נאמנות למדינת ישראל. דגלוני כוחות הביטחון השונים רבים ומגוונים וניתנים כהוקרה והערכה על סיום שרות, תודה על פעולה מסויימת והערכה של יחידה או חיל ליחידה או חיל אחרים.
