The 21st Company of the 71st Engineer battalion badge, the battalion was created from the 71st colonial engineer battalion and the 21st company was created on the 16th August 1949 after a large influx of Legionnaires arrived from North Africa, they became the 21st company (Compagnie de commandement) and were based in Saigon in the Gia Dinh district. In 1950 the company was under the command of Captain Orsini and was comprised of 17 NCOs and 94 Legion Pioneers and some Vietnamese personal, they look after the maintenance of materials and logistics of the 71st Battalion in Cochinchine, and also the construction of block houses and conduct mine clearance. In 1951 the company was enlarged to 10 Officers, 55 NCOs and 213 legionnaires, they set about 1951 with the building of bridges at My Tho, Bien Hoa and Vinh Long. During 1952, part of the company helped to train the engineers of the new Vietnamese Army while the rest of the company worked on the Route Colonial 16.
1953-54 the company underwent numerous missions in Cochinchine and Annam including bridge building and the repair of Route Provincale 13 and repairing damaged block houses and posts. 1954 also seen the company join group mobile 10 with the 6th squadron of the 1 REC in action from Tuy Hoa to Qui Nhon. 1955 under the command of Lt Corsin the company continues with construction work at Ba Ria, Bien Hoa, Long Hiep and Phu My until the battalion was disbanded on the 30th September 1955.
