Screwback.

The 1st Police Battalion was established on November 26, 1990, and was the first armed unit to take the oath of allegiance to the independent state and nation of Latvia (on April 30, 1991). On August 26, 1991, the battalion was transformed into the Security Service of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia, but on January 28, 1992 it was renamed the Security Service of the Republic of Latvia. In 1994, the service was transformed into a Security Service of the Saeima and the President of the State and was subordinated to the Ministry of Defense. Since January 1, 2009, the unit is part of the Military Police.

The Battalion is the beginning of several structures of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Armed Forces, the State Police and other security and defense systems. After the restoration of the presidential institution, the Security Service of Latvia was entrusted with the functions of ensuring the President, his family members and his residence security. In accordance with the newly established Staff Regulations, the Republic of Latvia Security Service was directly subordinated to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia by a state institution whose task was to protect the state power and economic interests of the Republic of Latvia.
